Born and raised Amsterdammer Tom van der Leij studied journalism in Utrecht and works as a travel photographer and travel editor around the world. His photos and articles are published in (international) newspapers, travel magazines, (guide)books and on websites. 

Tom van der Leij work has been exhibited in several exhibitions. Positive Papua People has been displayed in Paradiso Amsterdam, Hotel Arena Amsterdam and the Museum voor Volkenkunde in Leiden. Afrika!Voetbalt! was exposed in the Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam (OBA), Rotterdam, Den Haag, African Study Center, Leiden, Amsterdam Zuidoost CEC en tijdens Noorderlicht Groningen. 

In 2008 he received the European Photographer Award from the CTO: Caribbean Tourism Organisation for his two publications in the Dutch travel glossy Colombus Magazine. 

Due to his work as a photographer and travel editor for newspapers, travel magazines, travel books and for NGO’s, Tom travelled the last one and half decade constantly, visiting over hundred countries. Among them are the most remote places on earth. From the tropical rainforest of New Guinea, Colombia and Gabon, to the inlands of Madagascar, to the deserts of Niger, Peru and Libya and the glaciers of Norway, Alaska and Patagonia. As well as the main cities in the world.
